[17:37] <&DeryniBot> The smell from Wrengl's kitchen draws KK into the chat.
[17:37] <jemler> KK!
[17:37] * DeryniBot sets mode: +o KK
[17:37] <@KK> Hello, guys.
[17:38] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Welcome, milady. :)
[17:38] <jemler> Quiet here tonite, KK
[17:38] <~RainbowDragon> Hi KK!
[17:38] <@KK> I think I'm a little early, but I don't know how long I can stay.  Waiting for Scott to get home with more houseguests--whch is why I've been scarce of late on Sunday nights.
[17:39] <@KK> But I did promise Bynw that I would check in, if only for a little while, to say hi to everyone--at least those who are here.  :-)
[17:39] <~RainbowDragon> Are they showing up to welcome you to the new home?
[17:39] <jemler> Last week me and DesertRose had fun talking about Mel Brooks movies
[17:40] <@KK> They're showing up to see what our new home is like.
[17:41] <~RainbowDragon> Does everything have a place now?
[17:41] <@KK> And of course, it keeps getting better and better, as we tweak it.  Wallpaper is now up in drawing room; looks great!
[17:41] <@KK> Most things have places, but some are still drifting homelessly, waiting for a proper resting place.
[17:41] <~RainbowDragon> I can't remember... did the police ever discover who looted the place and were your belongings returned?
[17:42] <@KK> Nope.
[17:42] <~RainbowDragon> :-(
[17:42] <~RainbowDragon> That stinks.
[17:42] <@KK> Yep.
[17:42] <@KK> But it's only "stuff."  Coulda been a lot worse.
[17:42] <jemler> now is the time to be able to truth read!
[17:42] <~RainbowDragon> Good point, KK.
[17:42] <@KK> Indeed.
[17:43] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Indeed, KK and Jemler. Truth-Reading is always a useful ability to have.
[17:43] <~RainbowDragon> How is writing going or has your company postponed that?
[17:43] <jemler> Is? Kelos, are you saying....  :)
[17:43] <@KK> Let's face it: sh*t happens.  But one has to decide whether one will let that rule one's life, or go on past it.  The replacement for my stolen brooch is arriving with our visitors, having been remade in Germany by the original artisan.  Fortunately, he's still around.
[17:44] <~RainbowDragon> That's wonderful!
[17:44] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Coolness, KK! :)
[17:44] <@KK> I'm back to it.
[17:44] <~RainbowDragon> That's wonderful as well  :-D
[17:44] <jemler> If the artisan is still around, then at least it wasn't an heirloom.
[17:45] <+Elim> Morning KK
[17:45] <jemler> It wasn't in your family for 100 years or more.
[17:45] <@KK> No, it was a future heirloom--and fortunately, I was able to have it cloned!  :-)
[17:46] <@KK> Other stuff <was> in the family for 100 years or more, like Scott's great grandfather's cufflinks, and his grandfather's pocket watch.  *Sigh*
[17:46] <jemler> my mother has my grandfathers pocketwatch
[17:47] <jemler> my uncle has the long tom, a squirrel rifle
[17:49] <+Elim> I own, though my father possesses the tools associated with a civil war salt camp my family worked.
[17:50] <@KK> A salt <camp>?  What's that?
[17:50] <+Elim> It is where you produce salt by boiling sea water.
[17:50] <@KK> Ah.  Where was that?
[17:50] <+Elim> Salt being a very important resource. Here in Florida.
[17:51] <jemler> Blue Crab Cove?
[17:51] <@KK> Goodness, I'd never even thought about where they would have gotten their salt in those days.  But it makes sense.
[17:51] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Seems to me that if you did it right, you'd not only get the salt, you'd also wind up with potable water.
[17:52] <+Elim> jemler, Where?
[17:52] <+Elim> Kelos_al-Hazar, Correct.
[17:52] <@KK> Well, if you could catch the steam and recondense it separate from the salt....  Yeah, that would work.
[17:52] <jemler> You've never read Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank. A WW3 story, set in Florida. One time they went to a cove where they found blue crabs, and beaches made of salt.
[17:53] <Kelos_al-Hazar> (and the clean water may well have been more important than the recovered salt.)
[17:53] <+Elim> Probably the tool I am most fond of is the two man cross cut saw. I spent many an hour on one end of that felling trees with that.
[17:53] <+Elim> Inland salt is much more important than many other things.
[17:53] <jemler> bet that didn't make the trees happt, though! :)
[17:53] <Kelos_al-Hazar> I've used one of those more than a few times, Elim.
[17:54] <@KK> No, I've not read that--but today I skimmed back through a wonderful book called The Fourth "R", by George O. Smith.  I'd forgotten how much I liked that book.  It's available on the Gutenberg site, free download, if you want to read it.
[17:54] <+Elim> I need to get a kindle.
[17:55] <+Elim> That is the only way I will ever get to read all the things I want to.
[17:55] <Kelos_al-Hazar> I keep losing track of the URL for Project Gutenberg... LOL
[17:55] <jemler> Alas Babylon was written in the '50s. I had to read it in high school
[17:56] <~RainbowDragon> A kindle?
[17:56] <+Elim> Beaches made of salt? That is a little bit counter intuitive.
[17:56] <Kelos_al-Hazar> I still wish I'd gotten my hands on that complete set of E.E. "Doc" Smith books I saw once.
[17:56] <&DeryniBot> Sedina gives a highland welcome to TheDeryni as they join the chat
[17:56] <jemler> TD!
[17:56] <+Elim> Salt beaches are normally found in the presence of a dried up closed body of water such as a lake.
[17:56] <@TheDeryni> Hello all. 'ello Katherine.
[17:56] <@KK> You can actually download it right to your desktop and read it on screen.  That's what I did.
[17:56] <+Elim> Morning TheDeryni
[17:57] <+Elim> Can't curl up with a good monitor.
[17:57] <&DeryniBot> Hi there Kelric! Welcome to the chat.
[17:57] <Kelos_al-Hazar> True, Elim. ROFL
[17:57] <Kelric> %@#$%@#$^@#$
[17:57] <+Elim> Morning Kelric
[17:57] <@KK> This is true.  But one can't really curl up with a kindle, either.
[17:57] <jemler> hi kelric
[17:57] <~RainbowDragon> Hooray! The chatters cometh!
[17:57] <Kelric> massive grumble snarf.
[17:57] <Kelric> power just came on after a 5 hour power outage where I am
[17:57] <+Elim> RainbowDragon, go to amazon.com and look for kindle.
[17:58] <~RainbowDragon> okay
[17:58] * Kelos_al-Hazar wishes someone would break down and create a usable PADD...
[17:58] <@KK> I actually read the actual book, <then> downloaded it, as my print copy is getting a little fragile.
[17:58] <Kelric> not only that,  with the power surges and spikes when the power initially went out,  the old tv in the main living room was fried
[17:58] <@KK> Power outage?  Yike!
[17:58] <Kelric> which book?
[17:58] <@KK> 4th R
[17:58] <@TheDeryni> Had one here in CT also.
[17:59] <~RainbowDragon> KK, I think it would be neat if your books were in electronic form but somehow encrypted so you wouldn't be gypped out of their purchase price.
[17:59] <@KK> I guess the heat is straining the grids.
[18:00] <@KK> It's been in the low 90's here, but not too bad; low humidity.
[18:00] <Kelos_al-Hazar> I have a copy of the first edition of "Ringworld", and even back in the late 1960s, it was already worth more than its cover price.
[18:00] <Kelric> it's been in the mid 80s here in chicagoland and high humidity
[18:00] <@TheDeryni> Got too 98 today. Going to be in the 100's on the morrow.
[18:00] <@TheDeryni> err, to, err, too
[18:01] <Kelos_al-Hazar> We're not quite that bad down here in Alabama, but we're close, TD.
[18:01] <@KK> They were predicting higher here, but we never made it; tomorrow's also supposed to be mid-90's.  Yuck!
[18:02] <Kelric> well,  time to check baseball scores via mlb.com since I can't check on TV
[18:02] <+Elim> Kelos_al-Hazar, my game world is loosely based on Known Space.
[18:02] <@TheDeryni> Ah. We'll we had a massive thunderboomer storm today too.
[18:02] <jemler> it's about 90 here in ohio
[18:03] <+Elim> It is currently 96 here in Florida.
[18:03] * @TheDeryni shakes his fist at his dead air-conditioner...
[18:03] <Kelric> ok.  now to get his dinner out of the microwave,  now that I was actually ABLE TO HEAT IT UP.
[18:03] <+Elim> What is this "Air-Conditioner" you speak of TheDeryni?
[18:03] <Kelos_al-Hazar> ROFL
[18:04] <Kelric> and of course,  during the power outage I get sniped on ebay
[18:04] <Kelric> @#%^@%&^*#%^&*@!^#!$&45
[18:04] <jemler> kelric, what's with the typing?
[18:04] <@TheDeryni> Air conditioner.
[18:04] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Kelric: I get sniped almost every time I bid on eBay. Which is why I don't DO eBay.
[18:05] <Kelric> usually when it's something I'm really looking for, I make sure I am online to counter snipe
01[18:05] <~RainbowDragon> that's "figurative cussing" jemler.
[18:05] <@TheDeryni> Don't have one Elim?
[18:05] <+Elim> TheDeryni, Didn't for most of my life.
[18:05] <+Elim> Mine is currently chugging away keeping it around 85 in here.
[18:06] <@TheDeryni> Ack
[18:06] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Kelric: One time when I got sniped, every winning bid was approximately 3 times retail... and I hope they all had to PAY their bids!
[18:06] <Kelric> heh
[18:07] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Especially when the auction was supposed to be "no-dealers" and every one of the winners were dealers!
[18:07] <@TheDeryni> So Katherine, how's the writing/plotting going?
[18:08] <Kelos_al-Hazar> After losing eight plus straight auctions to such tactics, I've pretty much given up on the whole mess. :(
[18:08] <@KK> The two times I tried to bid on something, the price went so high that I just dropped out.  Not worth that much money.
[18:08] <@KK> Slowly, but it's moving.
01[18:08] <~RainbowDragon> Katherine is blessed with many friends who are welcoming her to the new place.
[18:09] <Kelos_al-Hazar> (the last two things I bought from eBay were via "BuyItNow" buttons and were bargains at the BIN price.
[18:10] <Kelric> heh
[18:10] <@TheDeryni> I tried to buy a leatherbound Deryni novel on ebay. (Can't remember which one, :( ) I got outbid because I wasn't paying attention.
[18:10] <@KK> Katherine is blessed with many friends who are dying of curiosity to see where we're living now, especially the ones who saw Holybrooke.
[18:10] <&DeryniBot> The smell from Wrengl's kitchen draws Shiral into the chat.
[18:10] <@TheDeryni> Shiral!
[18:10] <+Shiral> Hello all
[18:10] <+Shiral> Ta da
[18:10] <@KK> Yippie!  It's Shiral!
[18:10] <Kelos_al-Hazar> (One such: TreadMarks full game for about half the price it would have cost me to buy the electronic download from the "official" site. LOL
[18:10] <jemler> hi shiral
[18:11] <+Shiral> Yippie, it's Katherine, I should say. =o) I was wondering if you'd been abducted by Wild Mearans.
[18:11] <@KK> Are your cats being flatcats today, Melissa?
[18:11] <Kelos_al-Hazar> What was funny? It was purchased and shipped from Britain!
[18:11] <+Shiral> I don't know, I'm at work
[18:12] <+Shiral> I would assume they are at least lying down. Kind of doing their Lions of the Serengeti act. =o)
[18:12] <Kelos_al-Hazar> LOL
[18:13] <+Shiral> So how ya been, KK?
[18:13] <@KK> Augustus did a true Lions of the Serengeti routine last year, when I watched him take off on a mad sprint to catch a crow.  He caught it, too, though it escaped and claled in air support from its buddies.
[18:13] <@KK> called in
[18:13] <~RainbowDragon> Oh! Speaking of pets, I'm now owned by two 8 week old Pomeranian puppies, KK!
[18:13] <+Shiral> Oh wow, For a minute there, I read "crow" as "cow"
[18:14] <+Shiral> Augustus would be one hell of an ambitious cat to catch one!
[18:14] <@KK> Two Pommies...how cute!
[18:14] <@KK> He has at least seen cows, though I don't think he was tempted to try to catch it.
01[18:14] <~RainbowDragon> They are adorable, furry li'l race cars  :-)
[18:14] <@TheDeryni> lol
[18:14] <+Shiral> Congrats on the new family members RD
[18:15] <@KK> Augustus is a particularly athletic cat, too.  You should see him go up and down trees--or ladders.
[18:15] <@KK> What are the Poms names?
[18:15] <@TheDeryni> Pics of the race cars are posted on RhemuthCastle.com
[18:15] <~RainbowDragon> The new "daddy" beams with pride.... Thank you, Shiral.
[18:15] <+Shiral> Dare we ask if there's been any writing progress? She asks, shyly...
[18:15] <@KK> Yes, some.
[18:15] <+Shiral> You must post their pics to the Fur Kids section
[18:16] <@TheDeryni> They are
[18:16] <~RainbowDragon> They are an apricot male named Sunny and a black and tan male named Mocha.
[18:16] <+Shiral> Ah
[18:16] <+Shiral> I should obviously go check.
[18:16] <@KK> Cute.
[18:16] <+Shiral> =o)
[18:16] <@KK> At 8 weeks, they should be animated fur balls.
[18:16] <+Shiral> Awwwwww....
[18:17] <~RainbowDragon> Very, very much so!
[18:17] <+Shiral> Stop me, before I go adopt a dog, please
[18:17] <~RainbowDragon> hee hee
[18:17] <~RainbowDragon> They both have me wrapped around their paws already.
[18:18] <@TheDeryni> I'd say so
[18:18] <+Shiral> KK, I DID wonder when I read "fly." Not many  cows are aerodynamic
[18:18] <@KK> OK, I give.  Where on the site are the fur children?
[18:19] <+Shiral> Along the top of the message board, click on the tab that says "Galleries" Fur kids are the second ones down
[18:19] <@TheDeryni> http://www.rhemuthcastle.com/index.php?action=gallery
01[18:19] <~RainbowDragon> http://www.rhemuthcastle.com/index.php?action=gallery;cat=2
[18:19] <+Shiral> Or you can just click on the link...
[18:19] <+Shiral> I do everything the hard way
[18:19] <@TheDeryni> lol
[18:20] <@TheDeryni> Nobody signs in anymore. :(
[18:20] <+Shiral> I did,  yesterday
[18:20] <jemler> RD, at least it's possible to train a dog. with a cat YOU must be re-trained!
[18:20] <~RainbowDragon> LOL!
[18:21] <@TheDeryni> :) Shiral :)
[18:21] <Kelos_al-Hazar> TD: I lost track of a lot of things in the past year or so.
[18:22] <~RainbowDragon> What's humiliating is running with newspaper in hand to catch a squatting puppies awful offal.
[18:22] <+Shiral> This is why I stuck to kitties
[18:23] <+Shiral> But thank you, my puppy envy has tapered off now, RD =o)
[18:23] <@TheDeryni> Actually, what I meant was people go on to the site but forget to sign in with their ID. So we have many "guests".
[18:23] * Kelos_al-Hazar has not had a pet in years now...[18:23] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Still really can't afford one.
[18:23] <@KK> Well, that isn't working for me.  Can't just click on the link, and can't copy it off this.
[18:24] <@TheDeryni> Can you right click it, KK?
[18:24] <~RainbowDragon> Well, you can always follow Shiral's directions above.
[18:24] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Try right-clicking, KK.
[18:24] <Kelos_al-Hazar> If you see "Open in new browser", you're set. ;)
[18:25] <+Shiral> sometimes the long cut works when all else fails.
[18:25] <@KK> It says it's not found on this server.  I'll have to try later, when I'm not also trying to chat.
[18:26] <@TheDeryni> You may have to sign in first, but I'm not sure about that.
[18:26] <jemler> well, folks, i'm gonna take off. KK, have fun with you guests tonight
[18:26] <~RainbowDragon> Take care, jemler.
[18:26] <+Shiral> Bye, Jemler
[18:26] <@TheDeryni> cya Jem
[18:26] <jemler> nite all
02[18:26] * jemler Quit
[18:26] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Ok. I'm having an interesting time trying to even remember my login details on the rhemuthcastle forum. Could have been gone so long it cycled me off.
[18:27] <@KK> OK, I got it.  Cute furballs!
[18:27] <~RainbowDragon> Hooray!
[18:27] <@KK> <Lots> of cute furballs.  I'll have to add my 6.
[18:27] <~RainbowDragon> I think so too
[18:27] <+Shiral> Yahoo
[18:27] <~RainbowDragon> We would love that, KK
[18:27] <@TheDeryni> You're still there Kelos
[18:27] <+Shiral> Indeed!
[18:28] <@KK> Yeah, I'm going to have to go soon, too.  Scott just called, and they're about 10 minutes out--5 minutes ago.
[18:28] <@TheDeryni> As Kelos_al-Hazar, fyi
[18:28] <~RainbowDragon> Kelos, e-mail Bynw and he can either retrieve or reset your password.
[18:28] <+Shiral> Awwww =o(
[18:29] <@KK> I have a password, and went right in, once I right-clicked.  I've bookmarked it now.
[18:29] <~RainbowDragon> We do appreciate your stopping by, KK  :-)
[18:29] <+Shiral>  /me sets Duncan in the glowing green doorway to discourage egress
[18:29] <+Shiral> Hmmm, doesn't work anymore
[18:29] <~RainbowDragon> You had a space in front Shiral
[18:29] <+Shiral> ah
[18:30] * +Shiral sets Duncan in the glowing green doorway to discourage egress
[18:30] <~RainbowDragon> :-)
[18:30] <+Shiral> Ah, much better:)
[18:30] <@KK> There's apparently a difference between the wiki website and the forum website, which is what was confusing me.  (Just remember, guys, I recall a time when there were no PC's and there was no internet.  This was a biiiig learning curve for my generation.  But I'm still learning.  ;-)
[18:30] <+Shiral> No one gets through my wards without a struggle!
[18:30] <@KK> Just call me Ward-Buster!  ;-)
[18:31] <~RainbowDragon> LOL!
[18:31] <@KK> Anyway, gotta go.  I'll try to get back next week.
[18:31] <+Shiral> Oh, is that what they're calling Torenthis, now?
[18:31] * ~RainbowDragon hugs KK goodbye
[18:31] * @KK steps onto her Portal, waves good night, and disappears in a shower of green sparkles.
[18:31] <&DeryniBot> The smell from Wrengl's kitchen draws the_Bee into the chat.
[18:31] <@TheDeryni> Oki doki. See ya Katherine!
[18:31] <+Shiral> Nunc dimitis wards, since you must go
[18:31] <+Elim> KK, my grandmother who is near 80 uses a computer very well.
[18:31] <+Shiral> Bye, KK
[18:31] <@TheDeryni> Now she shows
[18:31] <+Elim> Have fun KK.
[18:32] <+Shiral> Nice to see you, if only briefly
[18:32] <~RainbowDragon> Bee, wave bye bye to KK
[18:32] * @KK Quit

DesertRose

Thanks RD!  Doing my job for me! :D

I'm sorry I missed KK but I was busy with my RL friends.
"If having a soul means being able to feel love, loyalty, and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans."

James Herriot (James Alfred "Alfie" Wight), when a human client asked him if animals have souls.  (I don't remember in which book the story originally appeared.)
