[18:11] <jemler> hi kk
[18:11] <@Evie> Hi, KK!
[18:11] <NavaWazr> LOL! yes, Thanksgiving first.
[18:11] <The_Bee> Hi KK
[18:11] <Shiral> Hello Katherine =o)
[18:11] <KK> Hi, guys.
[18:11] <The_Bee> We missed you last week, KK
[18:11] <Shiral> But we're happy to see you now
[18:11] <@Evie> One of our local radio stations started playing Christmas music on Halloween night.  I decided to stop listening to that station until December 1.
[18:11] <KK> Yes, I was in Florida with my dad.
[18:11] <The_Bee> How is he doing?
[18:12] <@Evie> I got your text, but didn't see it until after chat time last week.  How is he?
[18:12] <Shiral> We've decided that Reese's Peanut butter cups are actually  Rhys's Peanut Butter Cups
[18:12] <KK> He's a bit better; much better when he called me Wednesday morning.
[18:12] <@Evie> Oh good, glad to hear it!
[18:12] <Shiral> He must be missing your Stepmother. =o(
[18:12] <The_Bee> What doeshe have?
[18:15] <KK> Lots of things causing problems, cumulatively.  And he's old--nearly 90.  Something bronchial is the most worrying right now.  The collapsed vertebrae won't get better, but can be managed if we can get the other things damped down.  I've told him I'll try to come down again in early December, so he'll have something to look forward to.  We shall see.
[18:15] <KK> It was a good visit, though, and I got a lot of things done for him.
[18:16] <Shiral> That's good
[18:16] <EPCarpenter> Sounds like my visits to my Mom before she passed. Long trip, but she was happier there.
[18:16] <@Evie> I'm glad you had a chance to spend some time with him, and hopefully he'll be doing OK in December.
[18:16] <Kildara> Parent care is tough - but usually so worth it
[18:16] <Shiral> Aging parents are high-maintenance
[18:16] <@Evie> As I was driving home today from TN, my mom called to say that my aunt (Mom's oldest living sister) is in the hospital after a small stroke.  She's 94.  :-(
[18:17] <Shiral> Yikes, I hope she recovers, Evie
[18:17] <The_Bee> :(
[18:17] <KK> His vision is bad, though; thank God he was never really a reader, but he doesn't even see the TV well.  And his hearing is going, since he was last in the hospital--the 3r5d time this year.
[18:17] <KK> Yep.  Very glad I went.  And the timing was as good as it will ever be.
[18:18] <The_Bee> Does he listen to your audiobooks?
[18:18] <KK> I'm going to send him the ones I have.
[18:18] <Shiral> It's hard to pass the time when neither hearing or vision are impaired
[18:19] <KK> I suspect he'll fall asleep, though.  I hope his dreams are good.
[18:19] <Shiral> I mean, when BOTH are impaired.  (Didn't come out quite right._
[18:19] <jemler> i didn't hear what you were typing. you were sayng? :)
[18:20] <The_Bee> That's okay, shiral.   I took it to mean, EVEN when neither is impaired.
[18:20] <jemler> kildara, fyi: i get hit with fish a lot.
[18:20] <@Evie> My dad beta-read my novel manuscript for me. I got a few funny comments out of that experience, like when I had my lead character mounting a horse wrong, and he wrote me to say that if she was meant to be a lap dancer rather than riding pillion, the scene was fine, but if not, I might want to change it....  :D
[18:20] <Shiral> One way or another...aging is not for the faint of heart
[18:20] <KK> Anyway, my task for this week is to take the stack of tax docs to my accountant so he can do their taxes for 2013, since my stepmother always did those, and she passed in April.
[18:21] <KK> Nope, Shiral, not for wimps.
[18:22] <Kildara> Jemier - with FISH?
[18:22] <The_Bee> My mom had a sign :"Growing old is not for sissies."
[18:22] <Shiral> My dad also has impaired vision and hearing. I'm really hoping he WON'T pass his next driver's test.
[18:22] <@Evie> Yes, Kildara. Jemler misbehaves, and then I have to haul out the mackerel launcher
[18:22] <Shiral> He's not one to accept limitations on his activities with good grace
[18:22] <@Evie> It's a special macro that catapults mackerel at him if he tells a pun or off-color joke
[18:23] <Kildara> I'll look forward to that
[18:23] * Shiral catapaults the Chat room with Rhys' peanut butter cups
[18:23] <KK> Yep, my dad had to give up his license last April; couldn't pass the vision test.
[18:23] <Kildara> Shiral - you're the best. I caught two.
[18:24] <Shiral> No calories, so have two more. =o)
[18:24] <NavaWazr> Thank you Shiral, I appreciate the virtual dessert
[18:24] <Shiral> Hope they don't taste fishy
[18:25] <KK> I forget, was there a fish-hurling mechanism in our earlier software for chat?  Where did that originate?
[18:25] * bynw pauses watching "Enterprise" on Netflix and catches back to the chat
[18:25] * Evie grabs a Rhys's Cup out of the post-Halloween stash
[18:25] <The_Bee> Do we have any first-time chatters?  Two names are new to me.
[18:25] <Kildara> I'm new
[18:25] <KK> Bynw will know where the fish-hurling came from.
[18:25] <Shiral> Well we did get into virtual food fights, a lot
[18:25] <@Evie> I have programmed my chat software to hurl fish at jemler if I type /jemler
[18:26] <The_Bee> Welcome to chat, Kildara.
[18:26] <Kildara> Thank you. Having fun.
[18:26] <KK> Yeah, but that was already tradition before you joined us, Evie.
[18:26] <jemler> so if i type /evie...
[18:26] <@Evie> Kildara is new, and if EPCarpenter has been here before, it's been a while back, I think.  Although not new to the Forum. I'm enjoying the new Sir Albin Haldane fanfic. :)
[18:26] <Shiral> I don't really remember how it got started--it just DID
[18:26] <EPCarpenter> First time for me, after many missed ones.
[18:27] <The_Bee> glad you made it.
[18:27] * Kelric (~IceChat9@32F4F9.AFCB16.CAC8DB.A93869) Quit ( Quit: Light travels faster then sound, which is why some people appear bright, until you hear them speak )
[18:27] <NavaWazr> <--Not new anymore
[18:27] <Shiral> Dmitri has arrived to impede my taypwing
[18:27] <@Evie> No, we're breaking you in, Nava. You don't squeak like a new shoe anymore. ;-)
[18:27] <EPCarpenter> Thanks Evie. Albin's story seems to write itself- No headaches.
[18:27] <@Evie> I see Dmitri is excelling at his job, Shiral
[18:28] <Shiral> He really applies himself to it, yes
[18:28] <@Evie> I've had stories like that.  And then there are the ones languishing on my hard drive, waiting....
[18:28] <~bynw> jemler does many things to get fish hurled at him
[18:28] <Shiral> When ideas hit me with force and clarity, I don't waste those ideas
[18:29] <jemler> i do not!
[18:29] <KK> Yes, but when did we start pitching fish at miscreants, Bynw?
[18:29] <EPCarpenter> I have those too, Evie, but those are among the non fanfic things I write. No writer's block in Gwynedd!
[18:29] <~bynw> many many moons ago
[18:29] <jemler> forget miscreants! what about me?
[18:29] <The_Bee> there was a troutslap app, I think
[18:29] <Shiral> I can't really remember why or when it started. But it's become a tradition
[18:30] <Shiral> That's right
[18:30] <~bynw> it was the slap! macro that comes with mIRC
[18:30] <EPCarpenter> And the Muppet Boomerang Fish Act gag...
[18:30] <Shiral>  And the fish gradually got bigger.
[18:30] <jemler> let's go back to chocolate
[18:30] <@Evie> My brain must be in exile from Gwynedd, then.  *sigh*
[18:30] <~bynw> mIRC = most popular IRC client for Windows
[18:30] <jemler> brain?
[18:30] * jemler ducks
[18:30] <@Evie> Evie smacks jemler upside the head with a mackerel
[18:30] <jemler> see
[18:31] <Kildara> I see
[18:31] <jemler> lol
[18:31] <@Evie> I was wrong, it's not /jemler, it's /mackerel
[18:31] * Jerusha (Mibbit@OWIRCN-1029c739.dsl.bell.ca) has joined #deryni_destinations
[18:31] <@Evie> hi Jerusha
[18:31] <The_Bee> Hi jerusha
[18:31] <jemler> hi jerusha
[18:31] <Shiral> Hello Jerusha
[18:31] <NavaWazr> (too busy contemplating broiled salmon with a red chili marmalade sauce to consider mackerel)
[18:31] <NavaWazr> hello Jerusha
[18:31] <Jerusha> Hi Everyone!
[18:31] <@Evie> KK, behold the glory that was my Halloween costume this year:  http://www.rhemuthcastle.com/index.php/topic,1324.msg10759.html#msg10759
[18:32] <@Evie> I'd be tempted to wear it to DragonCon next year, but...August in Atlanta.
[18:32] <Kildara> A FLAMINGO! (right?)  That's awesome.
[18:32] <@Evie> Last night I wore it again, but with a pink jeweled tiara added
[18:32] <The_Bee> beautiful
[18:32] <Jerusha> Amazing
[18:32] <Shiral> If you add castanets, you could become the Flamenco Flamingo.
[18:33] <@Evie> someone at the party offered the tiara as a loan, so it ended up as the crowning touch, so to speak
[18:33] <Jerusha> Queen of the flamingos?
[18:33] <Kildara> Shiral - you're competing with Jemier
[18:33] <Shiral> I want some of that broiled salmon with chili marmalade
[18:33] <@Evie> Hardly anyone could guess who I was, which was half the fun.  People would come up and ask, "Wait...do I know you? Who are you?"  And I'd just squawk and stand on one leg. :D
[18:34] <@Evie> but eating was annoying with that beak, even with finger foods. I'd have to use one hand to feel the bottom of the beak and push it up slightly so I could get the other hand with the food in it up to my mouth.
[18:34] <@Evie> That mask would work great as a diet aid.
[18:34] <jemler> didn't you used to be a crochet mallet in wonderland?
[18:35] <@Evie> Hard to crochet with a mallet.  But I've played croquet.  ;-)
[18:35] <KK> That's a great costume, Evie!  Though I can see how eating would be tricky.
[18:35] <@Evie> Yes, the lower half of my face was almost as fully covered as the top half
[18:36] <KK> I am constantly amazed at how big a holiday Halloween has become.  It was just for kids when we left the States in 1986; and when we came back....  Amazing.
[18:36] <Shiral> I find a crochet hook is much better than a mallet, most of the time
[18:36] <@Evie> This was the first time in years I went to TN without bringing any of the Mini-Deryni with me, though. It felt really odd not to have them around, and no craft stuff to keep my hands busy.
[18:37] <jemler> -+
[18:37] <Jerusha> The mini-Deryni didn't celebrate Samhain?
[18:37] <@Evie> Though I brought back fabric scraps as usual, including more purple silk suitable for mini-cassocks
[18:37] <Shiral> Dmitri sends his purrs, KK
[18:37] <@Evie> If they did, they celebrated at home with the kittehs
[18:37] <Jerusha> And left no evidence
[18:37] <Shiral> Luke back riding!
[18:38] <@Evie> Luke is hunched over my left wrist as I type
[18:38] <Jerusha> A bonfire in the litter box
[18:38] <@Evie> Just the left
[18:38] <@Evie> Sitting between both wrists, in front of the keyboard, and lying across the left wrist. Silly cat!
[18:38] <Jerusha> Comfy cat
[18:38] <Shiral> It's really hard to explain Daylight Savings time to cats who are hungry
[18:39] <The_Bee> Melantha often wakes me up 2 or 3 times a night.
[18:39] <@Evie> The automatic feeder should be making a deposit in just a few minutes, if it hasn't already.
[18:40] <Shiral> My cats have to rely on the sleepy, grouchy feeder, instead
[18:40] <KK> I was in the air, circling Charlotte airport early in the evening on Halloween, and then landing in Myrtle Beach to refuel.  Needless to say, I did not make my connection in Charlotte, so spent the night there and flew on Saturday morning to Charlottesville.
[18:40] <Shiral> AKA, ME
[18:40] <@Evie> LOL, Shiral
[18:40] <The_Bee> me too
[18:40] <Shiral> Not a fun night, KK
[18:40] <Jerusha> Pleasure or business, KK?
[18:40] <The_Bee> To Melantha, anytime after midnight is breakfast time.
[18:41] <@Evie> DH and I have a vacation package to Myrtle Beach we will need to use in the next year.  Any suggestions on things to see in that area, besides the beach?
[18:41] <jemler> were you on a broomstick? :)
[18:41] * Shiral lobs a lobster at Jemler
[18:41] * Evie reloads the mackerel launcher
[18:41] <jemler> barbarian! no drawn butter?
[18:42] * Jerusha loads melted butter in a catapult
[18:42] * Shiral pours the butter and launches it
[18:42] * Evie draws a rectangle with yellow marker and tosses it at jemler
[18:42] <@Evie> there you go, drawn butter
[18:42] <Jerusha> :D
[18:42] <Kildara> Evie - there's a lot in Myrtle Beach - a golf course, for one. It's a major tourist (and retirement) destination, so I'm sure there's lots to do.
[18:42] <KK> Dunno.  Didn't get off the plane.  And I was returning from visiting my dad, Jerusha.
[18:43] <Jerusha> How is your Dad doing, KK?  Well, I hope
[18:43] <jemler> golf? a tourist attraction?
[18:43] <@Evie> I read that wrong at first, and thought "Jerusha is your dad?"  :D
[18:43] <EPCarpenter> Golf doesn't attract tourists. Tourists attract Golf.
[18:44] <Jerusha> Not a dad, but will be a Grandmother.  *shocked*
[18:44] <@Evie> Yay!
[18:44] <The_Bee> when?
[18:44] <jemler> doesn't have that "I am your father" feel to it.
[18:44] <@Evie> Grandkids to spoil!
[18:44] <KK> Better than he was, Jerusha.  But he's nearly 90, so he's never going to he young and healthy again.
[18:44] <KK> be
[18:44] <Jerusha> I hope he continues to do well.
[18:45] <Jerusha> In March.  I'm so not ready for this!
[18:45] <The_Bee> He and your mother must have married very young.
[18:46] * bynw goes to put the laundry in
[18:46] <The_Bee> March is 9 months after June weddings.
[18:46] <Jerusha> Um, there was no wedding
[18:46] <@Evie> I almost didn't make it here in time for chat, since I had to wait on my clothes to come out of the drier before packing them to return home.
[18:47] <Jerusha> But they have been together for some time
[18:47] <The_Bee> good for them
[18:47] <Jerusha> They seem to be in a solid relationship
[18:47] <Jerusha> Technicalities can come later
[18:47] <KK> They were very young--18.
[18:48] <The_Bee> high school sweethearts?
[18:48] <KK> Sort of.  It was wartime.
[18:48] <KK> It didn't last.
[18:48] <Shiral> Accelerated due to war separations
[18:48] <KK> But he and my stepmother were married for more than 50 years, before she passed in APril.
[18:49] <The_Bee> but it produced you. :)
[18:49] <KK> Yep.  And they both agree that that was a good thing.  Produced my sister, too.
[18:50] <EPCarpenter> Same thing happened to my Grandparents- When he came home in 45 it was over and he married a nurse he met overseas.
[18:51] <EPCarpenter> And the man my Grandmother married was one of the best men I've ever know.
[18:51] <EPCarpenter> Married after the war, that is...
[18:52] <The_Bee> My parentswere married 53 years.
[18:53] * bynw is back
[18:53] <The_Bee> wb bynw
[18:53] <Shiral> Mine made it through 15 years.
[18:53] <jemler> 35
[18:54] <@Evie> Mine are on their 53rd year too.
[18:54] <The_Bee> My aunt and uncle were married 67 years. They met when she was 3 and he was 6.
[18:54] <NavaWazr> mine split when I was 10
[18:54] <EPCarpenter> When my Mom passed they were 7 months shy of 50 years.
[18:55] <NavaWazr> I've known a lot of couples who have been together/married for 40+, and some 60+ years
[18:55] <Kildara> My mom and dad made 50 and a little more; he died about three months into 2000. He said he wanted to see the new millennium. He thought he made it; I didn't correct him.
[18:55] <The_Bee> most people would agree with him.
[18:55] <NavaWazr> although it seems to be fewer now. makes me treasure the time that I have with them
[18:56] <EPCarpenter> Close enough, and he didn't have to live through 9-11
[18:56] <Kildara> I know, Bee
[18:57] <KK> My dad and stepmother also got to enjoy a long retirement together; a very good match.
[18:57] <Kildara> 9/11 would have devastated him.
[18:58] <Kildara> That's wonderful, KK. My parents got to build their dream house and live in it for 7 years. It was a very good time for them.
[18:58] <@Evie> Wow, DS just showed up!
[18:58] <Jerusha> Laundry, or dinner? :)
[18:58] * The_Bee waves to Evie's DS
[18:58] <@Evie> LOL! Laundry
[18:59] <KK> I think my dad and stepmother had about 20 years of active retirement.  It was a great gift.
[18:59] <Jerusha> That is awesome, KK
[18:59] <EPCarpenter> Better than many get. A blessing.
[18:59] <@Evie> My parents are looking at a retirement community here, on the other side of Birmingham from us.  Close enough to get to easily, yet far enough from us for them to keep their independence.
[19:00] <Jerusha> Nice, Evie
[19:00] <The_Bee> very nice
[19:00] <KK> Whoops, look at the time!  I'll see you guys next week.  BTW, I reread Lammas while I was away, so I'm now ready to leap into revision notes for the script.
[19:00] <Shiral> Script?
[19:00] <@Evie> how is that movie deal?
[19:00] <@Evie> or was it TV?
[19:00] <The_Bee> glad you came, KK.
[19:01] <Shiral> Enjoy Once Upon a Time
[19:01] <KK> It's been optioned for a film.  Someone else has done the first pass on the script.
[19:01] <jemler> nite kk
[19:01] <NavaWazr> thank you for being here KK
[19:01] <Jerusha> Good news, KK
[19:01] <The_Bee> yesm thank you
[19:01] <Jerusha> Have a good week, KK
[19:01] <Shiral> See you next week
[19:01] <EPCarpenter> GNight
[19:01] <KK> Yep, lots of catching up to do.  At least I've done my laundry!  :P
[19:02] <@Evie> goodnight, KK!
[19:02] <Shiral> Clean clothes are good
[19:02] <The_Bee> nighters, KK
[19:02] <Jerusha> Definitely
[19:02] * KK steps onto her Portal, waves goodnight, and disappears in a shower of green sparkles.
[19:02] <KK> Nighters.
[19:02] <Shiral> Night, KK
[19:02] * KK (Mibbit@OWIRCN-3d2ec0ac.va.comcast.net) Quit ( Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client )
